Wisconsin’s citizens need a voice in the approval of off-reservation casinos in our state. In the 2003 compact that Governor Doyle signed with the Ho-Chunk Nation, he gave them 5 new off-reservation casinos without seeking public input or approval. 5 new casinos!

Assembly Bill 461 would insert legislative review into the off-reservation approval process. AB 461 passed the State Assembly and State Senate with bi-partisan votes and is now on its way to Governor Doyle for consideration.

As Attorney general and through his election as Governor, Governor Doyle has made strong comments in support of legislative review of off-reservation proposals. During an interview with Wispoltics.com, in December of 2002 shortly after his election, Governor-elect Doyle said the quote at the right.

But now Governor Doyle is saying that he is going to change his position and veto the legislation.

Please send an email or call Governor Doyle and tell him to not to let campaign contributions change his position on this issue and to remain consistent about legislative oversight and sign AB 461!

“It seemed to me that the question of off-reservation gambling in particular is one that the state Legislature should decide, because that's really a large policy decision for the state… And I thought that that's the area in particular where the Legislature, as the elected representatives of the people, ought to have some say."

Gov. Doyle Running Out of Excuses for Not Signing AB 461

The latest in a long line of excuses being used by Governor Jim Doyle’s spokesperson as to why the Governor is going to veto Assembly Bill 461 is that it “violates federal law[i].”  A puzzling position for an individual who as the state’s top attorney for 12 years was a strong advocate for legislative oversight.  more
